Kunst im öffentlichen Raum

Ursprünglich sollte die Skulptur „Aufbruch“ mit einer Höhe von 78 cm nicht hier im Gütersloher Rieger-Park aufgestellt werden, sondern bei dem Bildhauer zu Hause, auf seinem Hof in Verl. Denn bevor die Skulptur 2002 nach Gütersloh kam, stand sie in Berlin im Haus der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Ameling wurde jedoch auf den Platz im Park aufmerksam gemacht und ließ sie dort aufstellen. Das Schild mit dem Namen des Künstlers und des Kunstwerks folgten dann bei der offiziellen Übergabe im Frühjahr 2003. Die Skulptur wurde der Stadt Gütersloh von Heiner Ameling kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt und ist ein weiteres, Stadtbild förderndes Kunstobjekt neben den anderen Skulpturen Amelings in Gütersloh. Der Verlust der Skulptur wiegt daher schwer.

Weitere Werke von Heiner Ameling in Gütersloh sind „Der Durchbruch“ vor dem Kreishaus an der Herzebrocker Straße, „Faszination“ im Stadtpark Gütersloh und „Glaube, Hoffnung, Liebe“ auf der Grünfläche am Alten Kirchplatz. Letztere schenkte Ameling dem Förderverein historischer Kirchen Gütersloh als ewige Leihgabe. Enthüllt wurde die Skulptur 2004 am Tag des offenen Denkmals. Die Skulptur steht auf einem hohen Betonsockel, der eine dreieckige Form hat. Auf diesem stehen drei Hölzer, die nach oben hin spitz zulaufen und von einem bronzenen Ring umschlossen werden. Auf den Hölzern liegt eine ebenfalls aus Bronze gegossene Kugel, welche die Erdkugel darstellen soll. Die Hölzer sollen an einem Baum erinnern, in dem zuvor ein Blitz eingeschlagen ist und somit weiterführend die Naturgewalten symbolisiert. Namensgebend für die Skulptur sind die drei christlichen Kardinaltugenden, Glaube, Hoffnung wie auch Liebe, die der Apostel Paulus in seinem Brief an die Gemeinde in Korinth beschreibt.

Die Arbeit „Faszination“ wurde wurde von ehemaligen Schülern der Gütersloher Freiherr vom Stein-Realschule, der früheren Knabenrealschule, gestiftet. An dieser Schule erhielt auch Ameling 1946 bis 1952 den Kunstunterricht, der für ihn und seine spätere Kunst prägend war. Auf dem Sockel aus Muschelkalk kann man das Motto des Künstlers („art is the answer“) erkennen. Zuvor mittig auf der Wiese an Ibrüggers Teich platziert, steht die schlanke, interpretationsoffene Bronzeskulptur seit 2016 etwas versteckter am Parkeingang zur Ibrüggerstraße. Die abstrakte, organisch geformte Figur fügt sich harmonisch ihrer naturbezogenen Umgebung, fällt jedoch trotz dessen mit ihrer Positionierung und dynamischen Windung auf.

Die Skulptur „Der Durchbruch“ wurde 2001 an ihrem jetzigen Standort als Leihgabe der Kreissparkasse Wiedenbrück aufgestellt. Sie wurde auf einem langen, schwarzen, fast bühnenartigen wie auch rechteckigen, niedrigen Sockel platziert, besonders das den Titel wiedergebende, durchbrechende Loch in der sonst organisch wirkenden, festen Masse fällt ins Auge.

Biografie
Heiner Ameling ist am 16. März 1934 in Verl geboren und aufgewachsen. Nach seiner Schulbildung ging er für Studienaufenthalte nach Amerika und England. Als er zurückkehrte, übernahm er zusammen mit seinem Bruder die elterliche Gastronomie und Metzgerei. Trotz der Verantwortung im familiären Unternehmen ging er seiner Leidenschaft für Kunst nach und schuf neben seiner Arbeit in der Gastronomie zahlreiche Kunstwerke und Skulpturen. Der Autodidakt Heiner Ameling ist Urheber einer Vielzahl von Ölgemälden, Aquarellen, Fotografien, Gobelinstickereien, Tuschezeichnungen, vor allem aber Skulpturen aus Bronze, Holz und Stein. Arbeiten von Ameling sind in ganz Deutschland zu finden.

Until a few years ago, the bronze figure “Aufbruch” by the artist Heiner Ameling stood on this base. It was stolen in 2021 and the sculpture’s whereabouts is still unknown to this day. It is assumed that the thieves were interested in its material. Until a work of art returns to this spot, this sign provides information about what can no longer be seen and beyond.

Originally, the sculpture “Aufbruch” with a height of 78 cm was not supposed to be installed here in Gütersloh’s Rieger Park, but at the sculptor’s home, on his farm in Verl. Before the sculpture came to Gütersloh in 2002, it was in the House of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Berlin. However, Ameling was made aware of the space in the park and had them set up there. The sign with the name of the artist and the work of art then followed at the official handover in spring 2003. The sculpture was made available to the city of Gütersloh free of charge by Heiner Ameling and is another art object that promotes the cityscape alongside Ameling’s other sculptures in Gütersloh. The loss of the sculpture is therefore grave.

Other works of art by Heiner Ameling in Gütersloh include „Der Durchbruch“ in front of the district hall on Herzebrocker Straße, „Faszination“ in the Gütersloh city park and „Glaube, Hoffung, Liebe“ on the green area at the Old Church Square. Ameling gave the latter to the Gütersloh Association of Historical Churches as a perpetual loan. The sculpture was unveiled in 2004 on Open Monument Day. The sculpture stands on a high concrete base that has a triangular shape. On this there are three pieces of wood that taper to a point at the top and are surrounded by a bronze ring. On the wood lies a ball, also cast from bronze, which is supposed to represent the globe. The wood is intended to be reminiscent of a tree that was previously struck by lightning and thus further symbolizes the forces of nature. The sculpture is named after the three cardinal Christian virtues, faith, hope and love, which the Apostle Paul describes in his letter to the community in Corinth.

The work “Faszination” was donated by former students of the Gütersloher Freiherr vom Stein-Realschule, the former boys’ secondary school. Ameling also received art lessons at this school from 1946 to 1952, which were formative for him and his later art. The artist’s motto (“art is the answer”) can be seen on the shell limestone base. Previously placed in the middle of the meadow at Ibrügger’s pond, the slim, open-to-interpretation bronze sculpture has been a little more hidden since 2016 at the park entrance to Ibrügger street. The abstract, organically shaped figure fits harmoniously into its natural surroundings, but still stands out with its positioning and dynamic twist.

The sculpture “Der Durchbruch” was installed at its current location in 2001 as a loan from the Kreissparkasse Wiedenbrück. It was placed on a long, black, almost stage-like and rectangular, low base; the opening hole in the otherwise organic-looking, solid mass that represents the title is particularly noticeable.

Heiner Ameling was born and grew up in Verl on March 16, 1934. After his schooling, he went to America and England to study. When he returned, he took over his parents‘ restaurant and butcher shop together with his brother. Despite the responsibility in the family business, he pursued his passion for art and created numerous works of art and sculptures. The self-taught Heiner Ameling is the author of a large number of oil paintings, watercolors, photographs, tapestry embroidery, ink drawings, but above all sculptures made of bronze, wood and stone. Ameling’s works can be found all over Germany.
